Custom cabinetry built to your exact dimensions, with materials and finishes selected for Sarasota's humidity and salt-air environment — not just what looks good in a showroom.
The cabinetry industry uses three broad categories — stock, semi-custom, and custom — but the definitions vary by manufacturer. Here's what actually matters for a Sarasota kitchen renovation.
Stock cabinets come in fixed sizes (typically 3" increments), limited finishes, and ship quickly. They work for straightforward layouts with standard dimensions. Semi-custom offer more size flexibility and finish options with 3–5 week lead times. Full custom are built to your exact measurements with no size restrictions and any finish you specify.
Florida humidity matters more than most manufacturers admit: Painted MDF cabinet doors absorb moisture and swell. Solid wood and plywood box construction with a quality painted finish outperforms MDF significantly in Sarasota's climate. We specify humidity-resistant construction on every project.
| Feature | Stock | Semi-Custom | Full Custom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lead Time | 1–2 weeks | 3–6 weeks | 8–12 weeks |
| Size Options | Fixed 3" increments | Limited flexibility | Exact to 1/16" |
| Finish Options | Limited palette | Expanded palette | Unlimited |
| Interior Options | Standard only | Some upgrades | Fully configurable |
| Florida Humidity Resistance | Variable | Good | Specified for FL |
| Cost (typical kitchen) | $8K–$18K | $18K–$35K | $35K–$80K+ |
3/4" plywood box construction is the standard for quality cabinets in Florida. MDF boxes are cheaper but absorb moisture. We specify plywood boxes on every project regardless of cabinet tier.
Dovetail joints on drawer boxes indicate quality construction — they resist separation under repeated loading. Stapled or glued butt joints fail faster, especially with Florida's humidity cycling.
Blum, Hettich, and Grass soft-close hinges and drawer slides are the standard we specify. They outlast cheaper hardware by a factor of 3–5x and eliminate door slam damage over time.
Face frame (traditional American) and frameless (European/full-access) are both valid systems. Frameless provides slightly more interior access. Face frame provides more design flexibility for traditional aesthetics. We build both.
Painted cabinets show humidity damage faster in Florida — particularly on MDF doors. If you want painted cabinets, we specify solid wood door fronts. Stained wood is more forgiving of minor humidity movement.
Pull-out shelf systems, drawer inserts, rollout waste bins, and dedicated storage for small appliances. We configure interiors based on how you actually use your kitchen — not a default layout.
Should I reface or replace my existing cabinets?
Reface if: the boxes are structurally sound, no water damage, the layout works, and you're primarily updating aesthetics. Replace if: the layout needs to change, boxes show water damage or delamination, you want interior configuration changes, or the door style change is dramatic enough that reface looks mismatched. We assess at the site walk and give you an honest recommendation.
How do I handle the gap between cabinets and ceiling?
Three options: extend cabinets to the ceiling (maximum storage, requires soffits or cabinet fillers), add a decorative valance or crown molding to bridge the gap, or leave the space open with display shelving. Each has a different cost and visual outcome. We'll show you examples based on your ceiling height.
What are the most durable cabinet finishes for a Florida kitchen?
Thermofoil over solid wood substrate, catalyzed conversion varnish, and quality oil-based paint over solid wood all perform well in Florida humidity. The weakest option is painted MDF — it chips, swells, and shows moisture damage fastest. We never specify MDF door fronts for painted applications in coastal Florida homes.
