Custom vs semi-custom
vs stock cabinetry.

Stock Cabinetry
Pre-built in standard sizes, shipped from a warehouse, and adapted to fit your space with filler strips and trim pieces. Fastest and least expensive. Works well in new construction with standard layouts. Rarely fits an older Florida home precisely, and the quality ceiling is limited by what manufacturers stock.
Semi-Custom
Built to order from a manufacturer's standard options — door styles, finishes, and limited sizing modifications. More flexibility than stock, less than full custom. A reasonable middle ground for straightforward kitchen or bath renovations where the existing layout works and you're choosing from available options.
Full Custom
Built to your exact dimensions from the materials and species you choose. No filler strips, no compromises. The right answer when a space has unusual dimensions, when you want a specific look that manufacturer lines don't offer, or when you're building something — like a media wall or home office system — that simply doesn't exist in any catalog.

Materials & Finishes

What goes into
well-built cabinetry.

Wood Species
Maple, cherry, oak, walnut, and painted MDF are the most common choices. For Florida applications, we lean toward stable species with tight grain that handle humidity without seasonal movement. We'll show you samples and explain the tradeoffs.
Door Styles
Shaker is the current standard for good reason — it's clean, ages well, and works across design styles. Full inset, partial overlay, and full overlay constructions each have a different look and price point. We walk you through the options with real examples.
Finishes
Painted finishes, stained and sealed, or natural/oiled. In Florida kitchens, we typically recommend catalyzed conversion varnish over standard paint — harder, more moisture-resistant, and more cleanable. We'll match existing finishes where needed.
Hardware
Drawer slides, hinges, and pulls are where you feel the quality every day. We use commercial-grade soft-close slides and hinges as standard. Pull styles range from simple bar pulls to custom hardware. We can work with hardware you've sourced or source it as part of the project.
Interior Fittings
Pull-out trash, rollout shelves, drawer dividers, lazy Susans, and built-in lighting are built into the design — not afterthoughts. We plan the interior of each cabinet based on what you'll actually store there.
Countertop Coordination
We coordinate cabinetry installation with countertop templating and fabrication so the timeline works properly. The counter can't be templated until the cabinets are level and secured. We manage the sequence so there's no waiting around between trades.

Consultation & Measurement
Michael walks the space, takes precise measurements, and discusses your storage goals, style preferences, and budget. This meeting determines whether custom, semi-custom, or stock is the right approach.

Design & Written Estimate
We produce a detailed layout showing cabinet placement, sizing, and specifications. Written estimate with all materials, hardware, and installation costs itemized before you commit to anything.

Build
Custom cabinets are built to your specifications and finish-selected materials. Lead time varies by scope — we give you a realistic timeline, not one designed to win the job.

Installation
Cabinets installed level, plumb, and secure. Crown molding, toe kicks, and all finish carpentry completed as part of the installation. No unfinished details handed off to you.

Hardware & Final Walkthrough
All hardware installed and adjusted. Every door and drawer checked for alignment. Final walkthrough with you before the job is closed.

How much does custom cabinetry cost?
Kitchen cabinetry for a typical Sarasota-area kitchen runs $20,000–$60,000 depending on size, species, door style, and interior fittings. Closet systems, entertainment centers, and home office built-ins vary widely by scope. We provide a written line-item estimate at no charge so you know exactly what you're getting before you commit.
How long does custom cabinetry take?
From signed contract to installed cabinetry, a full kitchen project typically runs 8–14 weeks — most of which is build time, not installation. Closet systems and smaller built-ins can run shorter. We give you a realistic timeline from the start and update you throughout the build process.
What's the real difference between custom and semi-custom?
Semi-custom is ordered from a manufacturer's catalog with limited size modifications and finish options. Custom is built to your exact dimensions and specifications with your chosen materials. Semi-custom works well for standard-dimension spaces. Custom is the answer when the space, the design, or the quality ceiling of manufacturer lines doesn't work for your project.
Can you match existing cabinetry in my home?
Yes — matching door profiles, species, and finish is part of what custom cabinetry allows. Exact matches require access to the existing cabinet or a sample to match against. We'll assess the match feasibility during the consultation and be honest about how close a match is achievable.
Do you coordinate countertop installation?
We manage the sequencing between cabinet installation and countertop templating and fabrication so the overall project timeline works correctly. We can work with your preferred countertop fabricator or provide a referral. The countertop can't be templated until cabinets are level and secure — we coordinate this so there's no idle time between phases.
What wood species do you typically recommend for Florida?
Maple and painted MDF are the most stable choices in Florida's humidity. Cherry and oak are good alternatives. We avoid species with high movement coefficients for kitchens and bathrooms where moisture exposure is a factor. For areas with less humidity exposure — a home office built-in, for example — the options open up considerably.
